Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Paro to Thimphu

The distance of about 55kms from Paro town and about 50km from airport takes around 1hr excluding the stops. Drive south following Pachu River to the river confluence at Chuzom. Along the way to Chunzom, you will first pass villages like Bondey, right after the airport. Then the next village is Shaba and at Isuna, the road crosses bridge to the other side of river.

Just 5kms before Chuzom is Tamchog Lhakhang, a private temple owned by the descendents of famous Tibetan bridge-builder Thangtong Gyalpo. Chuzom (Confluence) is the juncture of Thimphu river (Wang Chu) and Paro river (Pa Chhu). From Chuzom, the road follows Wangchu River upstream to the capital, Thimphu.

Day 2 Thimphu Local Sightseeing

After breakfast, explore Thimphu's cultural highlights:

  • Folk Heritage Museum & Textile Museum

Day 3 Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass

The Dochula Pass is a mountain pass in the snow covered Himalayas within Bhutan on the road from Thimphu to Punakha where 108 memorial chortens or stupas known as "Druk Wangyal Chortens" have been built by Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother.

Apart from the chortens there is a monastery called the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang (temple), built in honour of the fourth Druk Gyalpo. The pass with 108 memorial chortens is adjacent to the country's first Royal Botanical Park.

Day 4 Punakha to Paro

Drive back to Paro and start today's tour with Paro Dzong, perhaps the finest example of Bhutanese architecture as well as a local religious administrative centre. Later visit Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower housing the National Museum, with abundant culture relics.

Next go to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan and ends at a local farm house, where you can chat with local people, see how they live and may taste some homemade wine.

Day 5 Paro - Tiger's Nest Monastery

Paro Taktsang (also known as the Taktsang Palphug Monastery and the Tiger's Nest), is a prominent Himalayan Buddhist sacred site and the temple complex is located in the cliffside of the upper Paro valley in Bhutan.

A temple complex was first built in 1692, around the Taktsang Senge Samdup cave where Guru Padmasambhava is said to have meditated for three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours in the 8th century. Padmasambhava is credited with introducing Buddhism to Bhutan and is the tutelary deity of the country.

Day 6 Paro Departure

After breakfast, continue onwards journey to Paro Airport for your departure flight.

Day 1 Arrive Paro - Sightseeing

Arrive Paro International Airport. Visit National Museum and Paro Dzong. Halt in Paro.

Day 2 Paro to Punakha

Morning drive to Punakha (2.5 hours). Stop at Dochula Pass at the 108 stupas. En route visit Chimi Lhakgang (temple of the divine mad man) by walking through paddy fields. Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong. Halt in Punakha.

Day 3-6 Trongsa & Bumthang Exploration

Drive to Trongsa (5 hours), visit Trongsa Dzong and Museum. Continue to Bumthang (4 hours) via Chume Valley to see yathra weaving. Explore Bumthang: Jakar Dzong, Jambay and Kurje Lhakgang. Visit Tang valley and Membartsho "the burning lake", Ogyencholing Palace and Museum.

Day 7-8 Phobjikha Valley - Black Necked Cranes

Drive to Phobjikha valley (6 hours). Visit Gangtey Gompa and Black Necked Crane Center. Enjoy a short trail hike in the valley to experience the pristine natural beauty.

Day 9-12 Thimphu Exploration

Drive to Thimphu (5 hours). Explore: Big Buddha, School of Traditional Arts, National Memorial Chorten, Textile Museum, Folk Heritage Museum, Thimphu Dzong. Day hike to Tango Monastery. Visit Traditional paper factory. Weekend: Farmers Market and craft bazaar.

Day 13 Tiger's Nest Hike

After breakfast hike to one of the most important religious sites in Bhutan, Taktsang Lhakhang, known as Tiger's Nest. Afternoon rest or explore Paro town.

Day 14 Departure

Depart from Paro Airport.

The Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek is one of Bhutan's most beautiful and rewarding moderate treks, famous for its crystal-clear alpine lakes, wildflower-covered meadows, and panoramic Himalayan views. Starting close to Thimphu, this trek passes through high mountain passes, pristine yak pastures, bird-rich forests, and remote campsites overlooking the Thimphu Valley.

Trek Itinerary

Day 1 Thimphu - Geynekha - Trek to Gur (3,350m)

Distance: 15 km | Duration: ~4 Hours

Drive for about one hour from Thimphu to Geynekha (Khoma), the starting point of the trek. Begin with a gentle ascent through forests rich in alpine flowers and birdlife. After approximately two hours, reach a large rock platform offering sweeping views of the surrounding valley. Continue trekking for another two hours to Gur, a picturesque campsite set amidst colorful wildflowers.

Day 2 Gur to Labatama

Duration: 5-6 Hours

The trail climbs steadily through open meadows and yak pastures, crossing scenic ridgelines with expansive views of the Dagala range. Arrive at Labatama, the main camping area of the Dagala region, surrounded by high-altitude lakes and untouched alpine landscapes.

Day 3 Labatama - Alpine Lakes Excursion

Spend a full day exploring the stunning alpine lakes around Labatama. Optional hikes take you to Relitsho, Hentsho, and Jametsho, each offering tranquil settings and mirror-like reflections of the surrounding peaks. This is an ideal day for photography, birdwatching, and relaxation, while acclimatizing at high altitude.

Day 4 Labatama to Panka

Duration: 5-6 Hours

Continue your trek across rolling alpine terrain, passing through yak grazing grounds and small ridges. The route offers continuous views of snow-capped mountains and vibrant summer wildflowers before reaching your campsite at Panka.

Day 5 Panka to Tsheregang via Tale La Pass (4,180m)

Distance: 8 km | Duration: 4-5 Hours

Today's trail crosses several moderate mountain passes and is especially rich in birdlife. After crossing Tale La Pass, descend gradually to Talikha Goempa, a serene hilltop monastery. Continue downhill to Tsheregang, your campsite for the night, offering a stunning panoramic view of the Thimphu Valley below.

Day 6 Tsheregang - Chamgang - Transfer to Thimphu

Distance: 6 km | Duration: ~3 Hours

Descend from Tsheregang through forested trails to a feeder road leading to Chamgang Village, marking the end of your trek. Upon completion, transfer back to your hotel in Thimphu for a well-deserved rest and relaxation.

Trek Itinerary

Day 1 Paro - Sang Choekhor - Bumdra Monastery Camp (3,800m)

Distance: 10-12 km | Ascent: ~1,000m | Duration: 4-5 hours

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Paro to Sang Choekor Buddhist College (approx. 2,800m), the starting point of the trek. Ascend gradually through dense pine and rhododendron forests, following high ridges that offer sweeping views of the Paro Valley and Do Chhu Valley.

En route, visit Chhoe Tse Lhakhang, a sacred site believed to have spiritual significance for pilgrims. Continue trekking across open meadows decorated with fluttering prayer flags before reaching Bumdra Monastery, famously known as the "Cave of a Thousand Prayers." Set up camp near the monastery and enjoy a peaceful evening surrounded by pristine Himalayan landscapes.

Optional Activity: Hike to a nearby summit (approx. 4,000m) for stunning sunset views of the Himalayan ranges.

Day 2 Bumdra Camp - Zangto Pelri - Tiger's Nest - Paro Valley

Distance: 12-14 km | Descent: ~1,200m | Duration: 5-7 hours

After breakfast, begin a scenic descent through ancient forests of pine, fir, and rhododendron. The zigzag trail leads you to Zangto Pelri Monastery, meaning "Heaven on Earth," offering dramatic cliffside views of Taktsang Monastery below.

Continue toward the legendary Tiger's Nest Monastery, Bhutan's most sacred and iconic landmark, dramatically perched on a vertical cliff face. Explore the monastery and learn about its deep spiritual connection with Guru Padmasambhava.

After visiting Taktsang, descend further to the Paro Valley floor, where your vehicle will be waiting for a comfortable transfer to your hotel.
